Build Better Tables
Metro Arts: Nashville Office of Arts & Culture, Nashville, TN
June 1–September 1, 2018
Build Better Tables was a temporary public art exhibition that explored the influence of past and present urban development on community food, health, and wellness. Presented by Metro Arts: Nashville Office of Arts and Culture, nine artists installed projects across the city—from bus stops to community centers to church lawns—advancing Metro Arts' aim of ensuring that every Nashvillian experiences a creative city. These projects included an outdoor bread oven and neighborhood hearth, a bicycle rickshaw for fresh-produce delivery, seed libraries promoting community food sovereignty, brass-and-sugar sculptures concerning Black maternal health, and dinners about generational wealth. Together, the artists prompted a critical examination of the social and economic forces that shape food access and culture.
